Pirelli refines the art of the girlie calendar

It is elevated to fine art, with famous models posing for top fashion photographers.

All little boys had seen them, stuck to pegboards at the back of a garage, the only bursts of color amid the dank light and grime and tools. Girlie calendars were there to sneak a guilty peek at while our fathers were talking to the mechanic about the ping in the family Chrysler. They spoke to feelings boys had but were thought not of a piece with polite middle-class life. Here, among working men and dirt, was where these thoughts belonged, even if the women on the calendars looked as if they were used to much classier surroundings.
From 1964 to 1974 and then from 1984 to the present, Italian tire company Pirelli has lifted the girlie calendar from those grimy origins, sending its yearly version of the world's most famous models, actresses and other lovelies shot by the world's most famous fashion photographers to a select lucky group.

Every few years, venerable art-book publisher Rizzoli compiles the calendars into ever bigger volumes. The latest edition, "The Complete Pirelli Calendars," weighs 10 1/2 pounds and retails for $85.

There's a case to be made for the Pirelli calendar as having its own niche among the best fashion and glamour photography of the last five decades. The great German fashion photographer Peter Lindbergh, who shot the calendar in 1996 and 2002, says that he has had editorial control to shoot the kind of photos he wants. A calendar initially conceived as a commercial venture has, as Lindbergh says, "become much more of an artistic endeavor."

Italian critic Edmondo Berselli, who contributes an essay to this latest collection of the Pirelli calendar, wrote in an e-mail that the calendar can be read as "the behavioral paradigm of our times: liberty, subjectivism, relativism, tolerance." Berselli's essay charts the increase of explicitness in the calendar over the years and notes the slow inclusion of women of color (an interesting omission because Terence Donovan's abandoned 1963 prototype is the most racially diverse of the calendars; Donovan shot the calendar with only black models in 1987, featuring teenage Naomi Campbell).

There can be little doubt that the legacy and ongoing glory of the calendar are the collaborations between artist and model -- and it's a tribute to the vividness of the women before the camera that they can be called collaborators. Mario Testino, with an obvious nod to the late Helmut Newton, essays portraits of upper-class decadence in his 2001 portfolio, most memorably Karen Elson, oblivious to the guests behind her, looking over her shoulder from beneath Veronica Lake bangs, pulling up her gown to reveal her charming bottom. The late Richard Avedon turned in a stunning 1995 essay on the seasons in which Campbell, daubed with gold leaf, stands for the dying intensity of late August, and Nadja Auermann, looking out from a face mask of icicles, is the frigidity of deep winter.

Lindbergh's two collections both attest to the fascination with behind-the-scenes that have characterized his work. ("Making is more interesting and more intriguing than the result," Lindbergh told me.) Lindbergh's series of models waiting in the desert to be photographed includes indelible images of the glorious Tatjana Patitz, who could be equally at home in Raymond Chandler or Dostoevsky, and, nude but for a pair of heels, an insouciant Kristen McNemeny sitting casually in a director's chair waiting to be summoned. Lindbergh's 2004 Hollywood portfolio features young actresses on a nearly deserted back lot.

If, as Berselli says, photography is about fetishism, then let me pay tribute to my favorite Pirelli image, Lindbergh's portrait of Julia Stiles. Defying convention, Lindbergh shoots her fully clothed in white dress shirt, black trousers and black tie. A plastic foam coffee cup and rolled-up script sit on the loading dock behind her. Standing with her hands in her pockets, Stiles flirts with both the eroticism of the shots of Dietrich in men's clothes and the casual elegance we associate with those off-camera shots of the likes of Gary Cooper. It's at once traditional and subversive, a perfect example of what Lindbergh means when he says he believes the most potent beauty is "grounded in context of the world" and an example of a Pirelli calendar's unabated ability to give pleasure.

Sophie Dahl was discovered by Isabella Blow on a London street at the age of 18. At a voluptuous dress size and 38DD bra-size, Dahl defied the stick-thin modelling status quo; she is largely known for being a plus-size model, although she has since lost weight and is now of similar proportions to other fashion models. Her best-known work was a magazine and poster advertisement for an Yves Saint Laurent perfume called Opium, showing her lying naked on a black velvet sheet. There were many complaints about the advertisement, resulting in its being removed from billboards in the UK, and totally banned in France.

Model selection for fashion week

China International Fashion Week opens next week. Designers are fully immersed in choosing the models for their big shows. About a hundred new faces are expected to appear on the Beijing runway.Over three hundred male models from 28 agencies turned up at the audition for this year's China International Fashion Week. 60 survived the selection process. But designers still complain of a scarcity of well-trained male models.

Competition among female models is even more fierce. Many new comers came from afar, in hopes of establishing their careers on this international platform.

This year many hopeful came from outside China.Wu Song, vice manager of "Models' Line" Agency Company, said, "It is cut-throat competition. If 30 models are needed, hundreds come for the audition."

Experts also note that China's booming fashion industry is contributing to fierce international competition in the model industry.

The 2008 China International Fashion Week kicks off next Tuesday at the Beijing Hotel.

Oscar-winning Kidman Fashion Models for Charity Fashion Show

Actress Nicole Kidman is due to strut her stuff on the catwalk for a charity fashion show in Australia.

Nicole will be among a number of other celebrities modelling designs by various designers in the show put on in support of the Royal Children’s Hospital of Melbourne.

The actress will be modelling exquisite designs from the ‘Wearable Art’ collection by label Sirali, run by designers Gunjan Arora and Rahul Jain.

“Kidman will wear a long sherwani like blue jacket with lots of red and yellow. The design on the jacket will look like somebody has embroidered the design, but it is a patented method of ours. The different colours blend on the garment to create the effect of an art,” says Rahul Jain to The Hindu newspaper.

Clothing from the fashion show will be auctioned off, with the proceeds going to the children’s hospital.

Caroline Trentini is a Brazilian Top Fashion model

Caroline Trentini is a Brazilian Top Fashion model. She was born in Panambi, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Trentini is the youngest daughter of Lourdes and the late Jacó Trentini, who died when she was one year old. Her older sisters are Franciele and Élen. Although she had never worked before, Trentini's mother got a job as a public employee when her husband died and raised her daughters single-handedly.

First Name: Caroline Trentini
Nationality: Brazilian
Ethnicity: Italian/German
Hair Color: Blonde
Eye Color: Green
Date of Birth: July 6 1987
Place of Birth: Panambi, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
Height: 5'11" ; 180cm
Measurements: (US) 32-23.5-35.5 ; (EU) 82-60-90
Dress Size: (US) 4 ; (EU) 34
Shoe Size: (US) 7 ; (EU) 39

At about age 13, Trentini was discovered walking down a street in her hometown by an agent, the same one who scouted supermodel Gisele Bündchen, and soon afterward she moved to São Paulo, a common destination for young Brazilian models. She was frightened to be alone in the big city, as Panambi had only 40,000 residents. However, her modeling career immediately took off, and after a year, Trentini moved again, this time to New York City. She couldn't speak English but quickly learned. Trentini's breakthrough came when designer Marc Jacobs cast her in his Marc by Marc Jacobs ad campaign, photographed by Juergen Teller.

In 2004 she was photographed topless by Steven Klein in a freezer, surrounded by meat, for a Vogue editorial. Although the shoot turned out all right, Trentini converted to a vegetarian. "[The photo shoot] was worth it but I was traumatized," she later remarked. Klein even sent her flowers and a card congratulating her on her professionalism.
Trentini's trendy baby-cheeked elfish looks and trademark freckles have helped her snag coveted runway spots at shows such as Louis Vuitton, Valentino, Versace, Victoria's Secret, Chanel, Christian Dior, L.A.M.B., Baby Phat, Vera Wang, Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, and Dolce & Gabbana. She has appeared on the covers of magazines ELLE, Harper's Bazaar and Vogue, among others.

She now lives with fellow Brazilian models Cintia Dicker and Bruna Erhardt in New York City. They are her good friends and "sisters." Of NYC she has said, "I have traveled the world and this is the place I like to be the most." She has said that Kate Moss and Caroline Ribeiro are her favorite fashion icons and that she would like to work with legendary photographer Irving Penn. Currently, she is the face of Gucci Cruise, Oscar De La Renta and Dolce & Gabbana Animelier.
In the May 2007 issue of American Vogue she was featured on the cover with fellow models: Doutzen Kroes, Jessica Stam, Raquel Zimmermann, Sasha Pivovarova, Agyness Deyn, Coco Rocha, Hilary Rhoda, Chanel Iman, and Lily Donaldson as the new crop of supermodels.

Heidi Klum Top Fashion Model and Supermodel

Heidi Klum is a German Top Fashion Model, Supermodel, actress, TV presenter, fashion designer, television producer and occasional singer. She is also the hostess of Project Runway and Germany's Next Topmodel, and is known for her modeling work with Victoria's Secret.
Heidi Klum has been on the cover of most of the well-known fashion magazines, including Vogue Magazine, ELLE and Marie Claire. She became widely known after appearing on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and for her work with Victoria's Secret and gained popularity as part of Thomas Zeumer's Metropolitan Models. In addition to working with world class photographers on her Sports Illustrated shoots, she was the object/subject of Joanne Gair body painting works in the several edition ranging from 1999 to 2006.
She wrote the foreword to Gair's most recent book of body paint work. She has been a spokesmodel for McDonald's, Braun, H & M, and Liz Claiborne, among others. She is currently a celebrity spokesmodel for Jordache and for Volkswagen. In addition to modeling, she has appeared in several TV shows, including Spin City, Sex and the City, Yes, Dear, and How I Met Your Mother. She had a role as an ill-tempered hair model in the movie Blow Dry, played a giantess in the movie Ella Enchanted and was cast as Ursula Andress in The Life and Death of Peter Sellers. She also had cameo appearances in The Devil Wears Prada and Perfect Stranger.
In July 2007, having earned an estimated $8 million in the previous 12 months, Klum was named by Forbes as third on the list of the World's 15 Top-Earning Supermodels. In 2008, Forbes estimated her income to be $14 million, which put Klum in second place on the list, surpassing Kate Moss ($7.5 million), but still well behind Gisele Bundchen ($35 million). Klum is signed to IMG Models in New York City.
The "Model '92" competition, organized by the Petra magazine and a New York Model agency, had a grueling selection process, where thirty to forty applicants arrived to Munich, hoping to be chosen as one of the three to appear on the Saturday Show of Gottschalk. While candidates were eliminated on a weekly basis, Heidi was one of the three finalists, and made the final cut to become "Model '92."
What began as a "just for fun" contest, turned into a life-altering event for the beautiful brunette. Heidi immediately signed a contract with the Metropolitan modeling agency, for a minimum of three years.
Heidi's first modeling gigs were for the Petrol catalogue. Before heading to the other side of the Atlantic, she modeled in fashion capitals such as Paris and Milan. When she finally did move overseas, Heidi found work in Miami before making the move to the highly competitive Big Apple.
With patience and effort, the work offers started to pour in for Heidi. She appeared in many print advertisements, including: Bonne Bell (which Denise Richards also modeled for), Finesse, Gerry Weber, Givenchy's Amarige, I-N-C, and she hit it big with the Victoria's Secret campaign.
In 1992 Heidi won the contest "Model 92" and after finishing school in June 1992 she desided to pursue a career as a model. Her first modeling jobs were in Hamburg, then in Paris and Milan. A year later Heidi Klum moved to Miami and then to New York, where she has lived since October 1993.
In 1996 she established the Heidi Klum GmbH and took part in developing logo. It became her trade-mark and she secure a copyright on her name also. In 1997 Heidi Klum walked the runway for the first time. It was the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, which was one of the most press-heavy shows in the United States, and it catapulted her to more recognition from the public and to the next level as a top model. In summer she said yes to Ric Pipino and they were married till end of 2002. A year later, she became the first German cover girl of the "Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue". That means 55 millions of readers, and a big international breakthrough. In 2001 he played her first small part in the comedy "BlowDry". Heidi played Jasmine, an eccentric hairdresser's model caught between rival brother hairstylists. In the autumn of 2003 she became pregnant with Flavio Briatore's child. On May 4, 2004, she gave birth to a daughter, Helene "Leni" Klum, named after Klum's grandmother. Around the same time of the birth, Heidi began a relationship with musician Seal. Klum and Seal married on May 10, 2005, on a beach in Mexico

Victoria Secret Model Adriana Lima Engaged to Basketball Star

Supermodel Adriana Lima accepted a big gift on her birthday last weekend—an engagement ring from boyfriend basketball star Marko Jaric, reports People Magazine.

“He asked and she said yes. They are both incredibly happy and couldn't be more in love,” says Lima’s publicist James Weir.

The Brazilian model turned 27 on Thursday and she and her fiancé, who plays for the Minnesota Timberwolves, have been dating for about nine months.

“I was not the person to fall in love easily. I am a difficult person from that standpoint,” Jaric told People magazine back in March. “Now, it's a little different situation.”

The marriage will be the first for both.

Sunna Gottshalk became Pulse's 10th Vogue fashion model

Sunna Gottshalk became Pulse's 10th Vogue model when she shot British Vogue in London earlier this week. Gottshalk who took off almost a year sabbatical from modelling is back in a blaze of glory. Along with the stunning eight page editorial for British Vogue, in the past month Sunna has shot 14 pages of main fashion for Marie Claire, on location amidst the majestic mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, as well as editorials for new fashion publications Indicate and Flux. Gottshalk has also scored major advertising billing for H&M, Nokia and a luxury car brand for which gag orders have been issued until the campaign is unveiled later this year.

"This is fantastic, a major milestone in my career" said an ecstatic Gottshalk, as she conveyed the news of copping her first Vogue from London earlier this week. She is also delighted to join the list of elite talent from Pulse who have had graced the pages of fashion's most important publication. From the French, German, Japanese, Italian, Spanish and American editions, the Pulse supermodels have made their mark on Vogue.

The exclusive list includes Kimberley Mais, Lois Samuels, Lincoln Wynter, Nadine Willis, Jaunel Mc Kenzie, Nell Robinson, Rochelle Watson, Oraine Barrett and Gaye Mc Donald. Of the group, Lois Samuels made history when she was the first to appear on the cover of the German edition. Nadine Willis' Vogue blitz at the beginning of her career also had its own historic significance as she made simultaneous appearances in 5 editions spanning 3 continents. Jaunel Mc Kenzie holds the record for the most appearances (12) in American Vogue and Oraine Barrett boasts the highest number of editorial pages for a single shoot captured by photographer, Steven Miesel. It is no wonder that Gottshalk is enjoying being among the Pulse of Vogue and keeping good company with her agency colleagues.

The eight page Vogue story was shot by Nagi Sakai in one of London's hip Kentish Town studios and came right on the heels of Sunna's searing 14 page Marie Clare spread shot on an African safari by Wayne Maser of Harper's Bazaar fame. Maser has captured the image of fashion, movie and music icons including Elizabeth Hurley, Jessica Simpson, Madonna and Lindsey Lohan. Vogue as well as Marie Clare is published in over 25 countries around the world.

Since she placed second in Pulse's Caribbean Model Search in 2003, the 5' 11 Gottshalk has made a significant impact on fashion's most lucrative and competitive markets. Within the formative months of her international career, Sunna peaked on the fashion radar and immediately secured editorials for American, Japanese and Swedish Elle, V and Black Book magazines. Consistently impressing the fashion industry's major clients, the chocolate coloured beauty quickly became the cosmetic darling for MAC, L'Oreal, Iman, Avon and Sephora. She starred in major campaigns for Orbit, Jergens, Dark & Lovely and Alexander McQueen.

From the hip streets of Europe to the beautiful safaris of Africa, Sunna Gottshalk, the girl from Burnt Savannah is burning up the pages of the world's premier magazines and making an emphatic statement with major campaigns on return to world modelling.

America's Next Top Model at Fashion Week and Elsewhere

Apparently the fashion high-ups don't think that America 's Next Top Model Cycle 9 winner Saleisha Stowers wasn't "seasoned" enough to be part of New York 's Fashion Week, thus the model's absence in the biggest fashion event of the year. However, this hasn't stopped the 22-year-old from representing at Fashion Week, as she joined three other models from recent seasons of America 's Next Top Model on the runways. One of them, in fact, is one of Saleisha's Cycle 9 competitors. Apparently Cycle 9 bad girl Bianca Golden was good enough to grace the runway along with Cycle 8 winner Jaslene Gonzalez and Danielle "Dani" Evans, who won in Cycle 6.

Moreover, it was a reality crossover for the America 's Next Top Model alum, as the show they were appearing in was the Project Runway fashion show for the five remaining designers on that show. Also, they aren't the only Top Modelers who are keeping themselves busy nowadays. There's also Yaya Dacosta from Cycle 3, who is appearing in the John Sayles film Honeydripper, where she worked with actor Charles S. Dutton.

Apparently the two enjoyed working together as Dutton is starring with and directing Yaya in a Lifetime TV film entitled Racing for Time. Based on a true story of guard at a female juvenile offender, the film follows a woman who starts a track club for the young women. Yaya is playing a "gifted young runner," alongside Elizabeth Pena, who stars in the film. The TV movie will be aired on Lifetime on Saturday, February 16 at 8pm, with another telecast the next two days at the same time. Recent reports claim that the film is "grittier and more stylish than the average Lifetime movie [but] nevertheless provides the mandatory melodrama and feel-good ending." To catch Yaya from America 's Next Top Model do some acting, don't forget to catch Racing for Time on Lifetime TV.

America's Next Top Model: Nigel Barker Speaks Out Against Seal Hunting

Nigel Barker provides insight to the young America's Next Top Model contestants that goes beyond what he learned during his years as a male model. He's spent time behind the camera as well, and so can speak to them both as someone who walked in their shoes and as someone who could be calling their career shots.

We might see him most often as part of the elimination panel, but Nigel is keeping busy outside of the America's Next Top Model world as well, and he's recently taken on the cause of banning the seal trade.

Nigel blogged about the controversial trade, first explaining that this is a large-scale issue for the animals: “Canada's commercial seal hunt is the largest slaughter of marine mammals on Earth. In the past three years, more than one million seals have been killed for their fur.”

The practice is condemned, Nigel said, for the particularly cruel way in which the seal fur is gathered. “In 2001,” he writes, “an independent veterinary panel studied the commercial seal hunt and concluded that the seal hunt results in considerable and unacceptable suffering.”

Nigel isn't afraid to give his reader a less-clinical take on the practice (readers who are particularly sensitive to animal cruelty might find some of this paragraph a little rough to read), “Well, being clubbed over the head when you were only a few weeks old and left to drown in your own blood could give that impression! Almost half the baby seals aren't even unconscious from the clubbing before they are skinned alive.”

The America's Next Top Model judge won't be swayed by any arguments that the trade is too vital an industry to be discontinued, saying, “In Newfoundland, where more than 90 percent of sealers live, income from the seal hunt accounts for less than one-half of 1 percent of the province's economy and less than 1 percent of Newfoundlanders participate in the seal hunt. So banning the hunt is not about the small financial inconvenience to a few humans but the massive suffering of millions of beautiful baby seals…..”

He's created a tee-shirt for the cause – a line drawing of a seal with a collar saying “Save Me” and has a website – www.bansealtrade.org – at which other individuals who have concerns with this practice and for the humane treatment of other living creatures can sign a petition in protest of the practice.

For all of Tyra's shortcomings, even her skeptics must give her credit for not being afraid to use her media influence to help raise awareness about issues she is concerned about. It would appear that her fellow judge Nigel feels much the same way.
